San Jeronimo
Hey, we visited the ruins of the Convent of San Jeronimo a few days ago, but we fell behind on getting our pictures on line.
The convent was established in Antigua in1739, and construction began shortly thereafter. It was intended to serve as a school for Dominican and Franciscan monks, who would leave the convent upon completion of their studies to pursue their duties. However, the school did not have royal approval, and the king of Spain ordered it closed just two years later.
Rather than demolishing the building, it was converted into the royal customs house in 1765. It was destroyed in the earthquake of 1773.
