Bolivia’s Fiestas Patrias

While in Copacabana, we also got a chance to see one of Bolivia's many Independence Day parades. We were particularly amused by the children's costumes: boys in full-fledged camouflaged military uniforms with plastic guns, girls in cholita skirts, scarves and hats or in nurses' uniforms, boys and girls in traditional carnival-type costumes, and even some special characters like a little Bolivar on a white pony.

All this happy crowd mixed with the hundreds of Peruvians who had come to get their blessings. The town center was even more jam-packed with vendors than before, with everything, from traditional Peruvian dishes and Bolivian flags to blankets or statues of the Virgin, being sold in Peruvian soles instead of bolivianos.

A nice reminder that in just a few more days we would be out of Bolivia and in Peru...

Enjoy the few pictures!

  1. ahh qu’est-ce qu’ils sont mignones !!! ohh but what’s that ? i see the word “chile” written in red on the up center side of picture 1. on the bolivian national day? i don’t get it…

  2. Don’t really know how “mignon” the military gnomes are, and fail to see the need for that many nurses, but I’m all for the proud Bolivar! These people do know how to have MUCH FUN – even with religion. PS. Matt, don’t let Pedro get away with his french mistake!
